About ABQ Bio Park Asia Exhibit

A new $33 million Asia habitat offers an immersive experience for both wildlife and guests. Spanning 4.5 acres, the habitat provides a new perspective on iconic species including snow leopards, Malayan tigers, Steller’s sea eagles, siamangs, and orangutans.

The innovative “flex habitat” design allows tigers, siamangs, and orangutans to experience different habitats throughout the day, while features such as “wobble trees” and flexible sway poles encourage primates to jump, swing, and climb as they would in the wild. Pounce lines give Malayan tigers and snow leopards opportunities to lunge and jump while engaging their natural hunting instincts.

Steller’s sea eagles have space to spread their wings, fly freely, and dive into their pond. Each habitat also includes thoughtfully designed nooks and spaces where staff can place enrichment items, including food and scented objects, to stimulate the animals’ senses and encourage exploration.

The immersive experience extends to guests through walkways that wind through forests, mountains, and coastlines, with bridges and ledges offering unique views of the animals from above. The habitat’s sustainable design incorporates renewable energy, passive ventilation, sustainable materials, water reclamation, stormwater management, and LEED-inspired strategies.
